More sneak peeks into the Office 2010 Technical Preview.  Nothing is guaranteed but most, if not all, of these changes will be in the released Office 2010.  Click on any image to see a full-size version.

The ‘Office’ button in Office 2010 is much smaller and hides a much-changed menu system underneath.

On the top left the standard window control button has been restored; the icon changes for each Office 2010 program (the PowerPoint 2010 icon shown above). Click on that to see the usual Restore, Move , Size, Minimize, Maximize and Close options that are on many Windows programs.

Double-click on that icon to close the current window / document.

To the left on the top row is the Quick Access Toolbar.

Clicking on the Office button reveals an entire screen of options – much more than the relatively narrow column of options in Office 2007.

Microsoft has spent a lot of time on the Office menu.

The first thing you see is information and settings for the current document. Setting Permission, preparing for sending and version control.

A welcome innovation is in the bottom right corner; ‘Other documents in current folder’ will open Windows Explorer to the folder where the current document is saved. That’s great because often related documents are saved in the same folder.

On the left are options like Save, Save As, Open and Close (moved from the bottom of the Office 2007 menu). There are also the improved Most Recently Used document list, New documents, Print, Share and Options.

To return to your document press the ‘Back’ button at the top left or just press the Escape key.

The Exit menu item below ‘Options’ will close the current document, not exit the Office menu. It’s a name change for the Close item on the Office 2007 ‘Office’ menu.

New

Print

The print dialog, that has remained basically unchanged for over a decade, has been radically revised.

There are pull-down lists for all the print options.

To start a print, click on the large Print button to the left of the ‘Print Settings’ heading.

The above screen is what you’ll see after pressing the Ctrl + P keyboard shortcut.

The Office 2007 ‘Quick Print’ option has disappeared.

Print Preview as a separate option has gone; all the view on the right-side is the print preview. At the bottom are navigation and zoom options. The above image shows a non-default two-page zoom. The button to the right of the zoom slider is ‘Fit to Page’.

Share

This is where you can save to SharePoint, attach the document to an email or save to a PDF or XPS file.

Options

The options menus have new options, depending on the Office 2010 program, but the overall look hasn’t changed.
