Going the rounds at the moment is a fake support message with an infected attachment.

The only thing you should do with such a message is DELETE IT since Outlook’s own protection doesn’t catch it.

Microsoft never distributes updates or patches via email and you should only download updates via Windows/Microsoft Update or directly from Microsoft.com .

The current attempt looks like this and is NOT caught by the Junk E-mail filter in Outlook 2007 even when set to ‘High’.

Subject:

Microsoft Outlook notification for the <email address>

Body:

You have (5) New Message from Outlook Microsoft

- Please re-configure your Microsoft Outlook Again.

- Download attached setup file and install.

This is a very poor effort to trick people. The bad grammar, plain text formatting and ZIP attachment will hopefully not fool many people.

However the next attempt might not be so amateurish, so everyone should be on their guard.

We don’t know what is in the attachment and we don’t care – any such file is suspect and should be deleted without further investigation.
